Lava Lake Full

A perched pond sits atop the west end of a very inflated Pu'u 'O'o crater this morning, as USGS scientists continue to forecast what may be a major change in the eruption on the East rift zone. Almost the entire vent is now filled with lava... and nearly all the surface flow activity was found within a mile of the vent. Numerous…

Lava above pali

Sizable pahoehoe lava flows, a tumulus outbreak, and numerous skylights, all within a steamy flow field... this surface activity within about 3 miles of the vent, but still a mile or more above the Pali... and nothing else anywhere on the flow field Thursday morning. Wonderful activity! Merry Monarch Festival Ducky joined Leilani, Special Return Guest (two weeks in a…

Big Spillway Flow

Significant changes on the 61G flow field today... still a number of small breakouts on the Pali this morning... but a very large flow was discovered within about a half-mile of the Pu'u 'O'o vent. Huge plates of hardened pahoehoe lava floated on a river of lava snaking its way several hundred yards downslope. Spectacular! Raggedy Ann Ducky joined Leilani,…

A Multitude of Flows

Rainy skies couldn't prevent our lava overflight this morning! The Pu'u 'O'o vent was inaccessible, but a multitude of flows were discovered on, above and below the Pali. Pele has made her way onto the coastal flats, but has made little progress toward the ocean. Mahalo to Paradise Helicopters' terrific pilot, Paul Davis... Leilani the Hula Girl, Dinosaur Ducky, Bruce…

Big Pali Flow

Today was all about the Pali! A quarter-mile-long flow sent steams of lava rolling downhill... starting out as pahoehoe and ending at the bottom in huge clinkers a'a flows. Surface activity in this area has been variable over the past several months... from enormous lava rivers to almost nothing. Paradise Helicopters' exceptional pilot Paul Davis carefully positioned us safely around…
