This region is named after the Kohala volcano, which last erupted around 120,000 years ago, birthing the first landmass to make up Hawaiʻi Island. Kohala volcano shaped the region's rugged coastline and plunging valleys, and the volcano's lava tubes now flow with water to dapple the region with the many waterfalls you'll fly past.
